Untitled (Cerberus) – d'Elias Kurdy, sculptural triptych with floral heads.

The sculpture garden of the Châteauvert Contemporary Art Center welcomes on deposit and for a period of one year, three Cerberus by Elias Kurdy. These works revisit the mythological figure of the guardian of the Underworld by transforming it.

In this work, Elias Kurdy revisits the figure of Cerberus by tilting it towards the unexpected. In place of the three screaming heads of the guardian of Hell, three fully blossomed bouquets emerge. The monster, reduced to immobile whiteness, seems to have lost its primary function : no more fangs, no more incandescent gaze, only blooms that disarm his fury.

Once responsible for keeping wandering souls at the threshold of the realm of the dead, Cerberus here becomes a paradoxical creature : its flower heads no longer threaten, they watch. They set up a final frontier — fragile, alive — between the earth and its own ruin.

In this plant silence, almost solemn, the sculpture seems to question our ability to choose : branch off towards a future where balance with living things is rebuilt, or let this balance dissolve irreparably. The myth, turned inside out like a glove, looks at us as much as he puts us on notice.

Born in Damascus in 1990, Elias Kurdy studied architecture at the International Arab University of Damascus before moving to Marseille, where he turned to the plastic arts. To be, he completed his training at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture then at the Beaux-Arts, where he obtains his DNA then his DNSEP.
Kurdy's sculptural practice is crossed by a tension between historical depth and contemporary fiction. He is interested in archaeological remains and their symbolic weight.
Humor and illusion play an important role in his work : his works often hang on the edge of balance, as if they could tip over, crumble or disappear at any moment. His interventions combine drawing, sculpture, architecture, artisanal materials and classic codes, seeking to challenge the idea of a linear history or univocal heritage.
