“A century of wine cooperation in the Var”
19 May 2021 - 29 August 2021
Why honor Var wine cooperation at the Musée des Gueules Rouges, scientific and historical museum dedicated to bauxite mining ?
First of all, the museum is housed in the former cooperative cellar of Tourves. On the other hand, in the Var, the history of the mines and that of viticulture are closely linked. We even tend, by deliberately enlarging the line, to say that in green Provence, we either became minors, either winegrower.
The two sectors are obviously part of the main sources of employment in a very little industrialized territory., in a society of the beginning of the 20th century still essentially rural. It is even very common to encounter "minor-cooperators" because for many minors, viticulture is an additional source of income. Like most small vineyard owners, the miners of the Brignoles mining area were often members of cooperative cellars.
This well-documented exhibition traces the history of cooperative cellars in the Var : their birth at the beginning of the 20th century, their development and evolution.
It also presents the striking architectural elements of these iconic buildings in the Var villages..
A play area dedicated to children, will make it possible to appropriate the exhibition through games, workshops and educational content.
