“Dark Side of the Moon” by Quentin Spohn
21 May 2021 - 19 September 2021

Inspired by both the history of the place and the village, myths and current events, Quentin Spohn delivers a new fresco inspired by Bacchus taking place on the walls of the cooperative cellar housing the art center. This fresco mixes with recent works created in the secrecy of his Nice workshop and with older works. « Dark side of the moon », borrowed from the group Pink Floyd, invites you to immerse yourself in a parallel universe that is both familiar and at the same time totally phantasmagorical...
“My practice, which is above all based on drawing, is built around two axes : I try to put a picture, often with a twist and humor, my perception of society and at the same time finding a place of expression for my own obsessions. Lucky, my work is both very inspired by pictorial movements such as the New Objectivity and the Ashcan School which offered a critical point of view on the world, just as it is somewhat part of a certain heritage of surrealist research around repressed expression and the obsessive. A painter like Otto Dix was as important to the development of my practice as an artist like Dado, whose work has been described as post-surrealist.
We find, in a number of my achievements, this tendency to mix real and marvelous, to introduce the strange into a realistic setting, as American artists who have been linked to Magical Realism were able to do. I was in fact quite strongly influenced by the works of painters like Georges Tooker and Paul Cadmus who represented scenes where the everyday rubs shoulders with the fantastic, sometimes with a burlesque dimension.. Moreover, the different themes on which I work also lead me to revisit a certain number of traditional pictorial genres such as the portrait, the war scene, the landscape, drawing inspiration from both a certain pictorial culture and popular culture with which I am quite strongly imbued. The drawings that I create can also refer to quite distant iconographies such as satirical drawing and fantastic imagery.. » Q. Spohn.
