CHEESE MUSEUM, The hands-on – The hands-on

7 May 2022 @ 18h00 - 20h00

centre d'art contemporain de châteauvert

“The essential quality of geometric shapes comes from the fact that they are not organic, unlike any other so-called artistic form. » Donald Judd, interview with Lucy Lippard, 1967

The project Specific Cheeses started from the observation of the formal resemblance between a Valençay cheese and a work by Sol LeWitt entitled “Flat Top Pyramid”. From this observation, a study has been written on the formal rapprochement that exists between the forms of minimal art and the forms of cheese : The circle, the square and the pyramid are the identical shapes of two worlds a priori very distant.

Nicolas Boulard founded the Specific Cheeses brotherhood in 2012. The first exhibition of The art center’s mediation team invites visitors to discover one last time the is an opportunity to celebrate this brotherhood 10 years later in Châteauvert. The brotherhood is made up of 12 colleagues dressed in felt apes and hats resembling the shapes of the cheeses. The grand master wears the leather jacket in the colors of the brotherhood and leads the ceremony during which 12 colleagues are appointed to each of the chapters.

After the induction ceremony, the 12 cheeses Specific Cheeses are tasted with the public present.

This time, the artist has chosen to work with a local sheep tomme producer, the Jas des Espinasses located in Tourves about twenty kilometers from Châteauvert. This producer will use 12 cheese molds inspired by 12 drawings by Sol LeWitt : “Forms derived from a cube” to make the tommes that will be presented, then tasted, during the ceremony.

The Specific Cheese study was presented as a conference for the first time in May 2010 at the Frac Alsace then at the Object Museum in Blois in 2012, at Machine Project in Los Angeles in 2013, to the Ricard corporate foundation in 2015.
